What is Pocklington and Wolds Gateway Partnership?

The Pocklington and Wolds Gateway Project (the Gateway) was originally set up to respond to various initiatives intended to help fund the regeneration of the Market Towns. The intention was to gain funding to assist in local projects brought forward by local people. Support was originally available from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

The group consists of volunteers from the community, local East Riding and Town/ Parish Councillors, the Chamber of Trade and other interested organisations within the area. While core membership is quite small (and new members are always welcome) the membership varies depending upon the initiative being undertaken at the time. Thus, individuals or groups with ideas that may benefit the community can join the group for the period required to progress their project as far as possible.

The area of interest is, broadly, the hinterland of Pocklington and the Wolds. Thisis defined for our purposes as the catchment area of Woldgate College.

In order to respond to funding initiatives, the group was expected to produce lengthy reports etc and this was expected to be done with little or no support.  Rather then increase support, East Riding withdrew their administrative support altogether and the group was left to its own devices.

A decision was taken to continue and to use as the main driving factor "Access". This was taken in its broadest sense. At the same time Humber and Wolds Rural Community Council (HWRCC) offered secretarial and administrative support through one of their intiatives. This period heralded an increased productivity for the group. Initiatives were set up to bring Broadband to the town, improve disabled access, set up activity days for children to allow them to sample activities within Pocklington and to "do something" about the appalling A1079.

The area has developed over the years and many new residents have been welcomed into the community. The A1079 is the arterial route for all and is no longer able to safely cope, threatening the sustainability of the communities. All the communities along the road were invited to a meeting and since then Action Access A1079 (AAA1079) has lobbied for and received high levels of support. You can read more by going to the links page on this site and following the hyperlink to the AAA1079 site.

Sadly, HWRCC are no longer able to provide secretarial support and while we recognise and thank them for their tremendous work, it means that core members are now carrying out secretarial work for both the Gateway and AAA1079.

Recently, a major initiative, in partnership with East Riding Council, produced a series of cycle routes through our region.

The Gateway is now a partnership, recognised as being strategic in nature. New members are welcome and new projects are considered on their merits. We have achieved a great deal and believe that we, in partnership with others, will continue to achieve even more in the future.
